Why do I receive the error "Your computer processor is missing the SSE2 instruction set." when trying to install MATLAB or a Parallel Computing Worker?

I am trying to run MATLAB 7.6 (R2008a) on Linux. When I try to install it I receive the following error:
Your computer processor is missing the SSE2 instruction set.

This error is caused when an unsupported processor such as the Athlon MP 2600 is used. This processor was last supported by Release R2006a.
