Is it possible to download and process images Asynchronously?

I need to capture images from an IP camera and process them. However, the processing sometimes falls behind the camera's framerate for short periods of time. If possible, I'd like to have 2 loops running - one to continuously download images from the camera at the desired framerate and one to do the processing on the downloaded images. Would this be possible using, for instance, two different callback functions on the GUI? My alternative would be to have two separate executables that communicated with each other by writing text files. That way Windows could handle everything for me. Please let me know if there is a good way to have two loops running asynchronously in the MATLAB environment.
