Create and edit documents for safety analyses

Description

The Safety Analysis Manager app lets you create and edit documents for safety analyses. You can:

• Create tabular safety analysis documents, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs).

• Create deductive analysis documents, such as Fault Tree Analyses (FTA) (since R2026b).

• Link document elements to model artifacts such as requirements and faults.

• Analyze documents by running MATLAB^® callback code.

Open the Safety Analysis Manager App

• MATLAB Toolstrip (since R2024b): On the Apps tab, in the Apps section, under Model Verification, Validation, and Test, click Safety Analysis Manager.

• Simulink^® Toolstrip: On the Apps tab, under Model Verification, Validation, and Test, click Safety Analysis Manager.

• MATLAB command prompt: Enter safetyAnalysisMgr.openManager or safetyAnalysisManager.

Examples

Create New Documents

You can create a new document by creating an empty document or using a template that has specified columns and column types. To create a new document:

1. In the Safety Analysis Manager, in the File section, click New .

2. Create an empty spreadsheet or fault tree document by clicking Empty Spreadsheet or Empty Fault Tree Document. Alternatively, open a template by clicking From Template File. If you select From Template File, you must select an MLDATX template file.

You can navigate documents in the Opened Documents pane.

Manage Diagnostics

The Diagnostics pane lists diagnostics from the scripts that you create in callbacks. The pane displays the same types of diagnostic messages that appear in the Diagnostic Viewer in Simulink models. See Diagnostic Viewer. You can use filters to display errors, warnings, or information.

1. At the bottom of the Safety Analysis Manager, expand the Diagnostics pane by clicking the Expand Bottom button .

2. To display:

   • Information — Click the Show/Hide information button .

   • Warnings — Click the Show/Hide warnings button .

   • Errors — Click the Show/Hide errors button .

The pane displays the number of each kind of diagnostic message next to the corresponding button. Each message links to the document that contains the diagnostic.

To clear the diagnostics, click the Clear all diagnostics button .

To export diagnostics, click the Export diagnostics button . Save the diagnostics as a TXT file.

Parameters

Description — Specify document or artifact description

Specify the description of the document or the document artifact. In the Properties pane, select the document or the artifact tab and enter the description in the Description box. You can add descriptions to spreadsheets, rows, cells, fault tree documents, events, gates, and failure models.

Document Attributes — Specify document attributes

Specify document attributes, which are a combination of properties and values. To create a document attribute, in the Properties pane, in the Spreadsheet or Fault Tree Document tab, in the Document attributes section, click the Add new document attribute button . To delete a document attribute, select the attribute and click the Delete document attribute button .

R2026b: Perform fault tree analysis

Use the Safety Analysis Manager to perform fault tree analysis.

R2026b: Clear content from selected text and check box cells

To clear content from multiple text and check box column cells, select multiple cells by holding Ctrl and clicking each cell, and then press Delete in the Edit section or press Del on your keyboard.

R2026b: Use the sfa_document keyword in callbacks instead of sfa_spreadsheet

To retrieve the Spreadsheet or FaultTreeDocument object in a callback, use the sfa_document keyword. The sfa_spreadsheet keyword is not recommended. However, there are no plans to remove support for sfa_spreadsheet.

R2026b: Refresh Links button and refreshLinks function have been removed

The Refresh Links button has been removed. To refresh the link status, point to the link icon or click the linked artifact.

R2026a: Update resolved status of links by pointing and clicking

To update the resolved status of a link in a spreadsheet, point to the link icon or click the linked artifact.

R2026a: Create descriptions for enumeration column values

You can add information to enumeration column values by adding comments to the right of the value in the enumeration class definition file.

R2026a: Templates store column visibility

When you create a template from a spreadsheet, the template maintains which columns are visible and hidden.

R2025a: Update text in spreadsheet cells by using keyboard shortcuts

You can update the text in a text column by pressing Enter after you write content in a text column cell. To add a new line, press Shift+Enter.

R2025a: Paste content into multiple text cells simultaneously

To paste content from a cell into multiple text column cells simultaneously, copy the content from a single text or derived column cell, select multiple text column cells by clicking and dragging, or by holding Ctrl while selecting individual cells, and paste the content.

R2025a: Update resolved status of links

You can now update that resolved status of links in the Safety Analysis Manager. In the Links section, click Refresh Links.

R2024b: Track changes to artifacts linked to spreadsheet rows and cells in a project

If you have Requirements Toolbox™, identify changes to links or artifacts linked to cells and rows in a spreadsheet contained in a project. For more information, see Track Changes in Safety Analysis Manager Spreadsheets.

R2024b: Reference spreadsheet cells

Use data from other cells in derived columns by creating references. For more information, see Create References in Derived Column Cells.

R2024b: Link rows in spreadsheets

If you have Requirements Toolbox, link rows in Safety Analysis Manager spreadsheets to other linkable artifacts. For more information, see Link Safety Analysis Manager Spreadsheet Cells and Rows to Requirements, Tests, and Faults.

R2024b: Manually refresh derived cell values

Recalculate the cell values in derived columns in Safety Analysis Manager spreadsheets by clicking Refresh Values in the spreadsheet, or by using the refreshDerivedValues function. You can also refresh the values in derived columns just before running callbacks by clicking Analyze Spreadsheet > Refresh Values and Analyze Spreadsheet.

R2024b: Self-reference derived cells

Use the sfa_cell keyword in Safety Analysis Manager spreadsheet derived column formulas to self-reference their cells. For more information, see Use Self-References in Derived Columns.

R2024b: Open the Safety Analysis Manager from MATLAB

Open the Safety Analysis Manager from the MATLAB toolstrip.

R2024a: Create custom callbacks in Safety Analysis Manager spreadsheets

If you want to create a callback that you can turn on or off when you analyze your Safety Analysis Manager spreadsheets, create custom callbacks.
