GPMS Accelerates Development of Helicopter Predictive Maintenance Solutions
Using MATLAB Enables Faster Time to Market for New Solutions
"Our entire test and validation process is enabled by MATLAB. All R&D and product development is run in MATLAB—it would be difficult to imagine doing this without MATLAB.”
Key Outcomes
- MATLAB enables faster prototyping of new predictive maintenance functionality
- Estimated 90% reduction in development time allows for faster introduction of new solutions to the market
- Results from testing in MATLAB support certification of new systems, reducing deployment time for safety-critical assets
GPMS develops health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS)—including both condition monitoring and predictive maintenance solutions—for the helicopter market. These systems enhance operational readiness by supporting engine performance checks, rotor track and balance, and flight data monitoring. Its product, Foresight MX, provides value to the industry by reducing costs and downtime for unscheduled maintenance, enabling more effective asset planning, and improving safety. For example, replacing components before they fail can significantly reduce the cost of gearbox inspections and rebuilds, providing an estimated 50 additional hours of flight time per year.
A typical health monitoring unit is complex, comprising several tachometer interfaces, analog interfaces for capturing aircraft parameter data, accelerometers, and other components. With MATLAB®, GPMS can streamline the entire test and validation process for HUMS and predictive maintenance solutions. The team uses MATLAB for designing condition monitoring and predictive maintenance algorithms, analyzing and visualizing onboard sensor data, and defining component relationships for the required helicopter platform.
MATLAB has enabled GPMS to prototype new predictive maintenance functionalities that would otherwise need to be created from scratch. This has resulted in a 90% reduction in development time, allowing GPMS to bring new solutions to the helicopter market faster.
