Job Summary
Based in Cambridge and supporting growing payroll operations across EMEA, this role focuses on managing current payroll operations, supporting modernization of the function through increased adoption of technology, and developing deep expertise in regional payroll practices, tax legislation and compliance. The Payroll Specialist/Professional will work extensively with payroll platforms including Workday and Deel, ensuring accurate and timely payroll delivery across multiple countries. The role involves close collaboration with HR, finance, and external vendors, and offers opportunities to lead process improvements, support strategic initiatives and contribute to the evolution of payroll projects across the region.
The candidate must be hands-on, prioritise to meet deadlines, be detail-oriented and accurate, as well as effectively communicate with various employees throughout the organization in the strictest of confidence. Must be capable of working independently and as part of a team with a high level of customer service.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Manage monthly payroll for Belgium, Netherlands and the UK, with our external payroll providers. Provide backup coverage for France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain and Switzerland, during illnesses and absence.
- Conduct pre- and post-payroll audits of payroll ensuring adherence to process controls and accuracy in payroll delivery. Coordinate vendor and government payments, prepare metrics, track errors, and implement corrective actions.
- Partner with the financial accounting team to perform payroll-related journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and analyses. Identify and investigate anomalies, ensuring data integrity.
- Stay current with payroll and tax laws for all entities, proactively informing management of relevant changes.
- Develop supporting schedules for tax filings, pension plans, employee insurance plans, and financial audits.
- Act as a liaison with payroll providers, ensuring service quality and issue resolution.
- Lead process improvement initiatives, identifying pain points, clearly articulating requirements, and implementing solutions.
- Serve as a key contributor to EMEA payroll provider reviews, including RFP processes and potential implementation projects.
- Build knowledge of and support global payroll operations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional work experience (or a master's degree, or equivalent experience) is required.
Additional Qualifications
- 3+ years payroll experience in the high technology industry; including multi-country exposure
- Proficiency with payroll software; experience with Workday and Deel is highly desirable
- Skilled in Excel and MS Office applications
- Proven ability to handle confidential information responsibly and a working appreciation of GDPR.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong customer service, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, vendors and government agencies
- Effective documentation and audit trail skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and persistent in follow-up
- Solid understanding of accounting terms, processes and accrual-based accounting
