Accelerating the Drug Discovery Process with Mathematical Modelling and MATLAB

    David Gavaghan, University of Oxford

Computational modelling of biological systems is an important and challenging topic, and systems biology approaches to drug discovery are revolutionising the pharmaceutical industry. In this talk, David outlines some of the ways the University of Oxford is equipping students with the necessary skills for careers in industry and research. In particular, he explains how MATLAB is used to enhance student learning in the doctoral training centres for life science, systems biology, and systems approaches to biomedical science. He demonstrates the output of a student project that resulted in creating a front-end to the Cancer, Heart, and Soft Tissue Environment (CHASTE) and shows how the scripting and visualisation power of MATLAB makes the modelling capability in CHASTE accessible to a wider audience of scientists.
