Simulink HDL Coder was introduced as a product in R2006b. In 2012a, we added the capability to generate HDL code directly from a MATLAB function. At that time the product was renamed to simply "HDL Coder". Irrespective of the product naming, HDL Coder has always been an extra cost toolbox, not included with the base MATLAB or Simulink. Your local install R2009b may not have had Simulink HDL Coder installed; likewise, your R2012b install may not have HDL Coder installed. You can use the ver command to see what software you have installed and licensed.

Keep in mind that it is an optional extra-cost product, and requires Fixed Point Designer and MATLAB Coder to work. MATLAB Coder is a high-cost optional product (and is not available in any Student Version license.)

Hi! I have already bought a Student Version License and I need HDL Coder for a project I am doing. What must I do?
